Red sox activate outfielder Shane Victorino from disabled list

BOSTON, MA - The Boston Red Sox today activated outfielder Shane Victorino from the 15-day disabled list. To make room for him on the 25-man roster, infielder Luis Jimenez was designated for assignment. Victorino will be available for tonight's series opener against the Oakland Athletics at O.co Coliseum at 10:05 p.m.

Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.

Victorino, 34, was placed on the disabled list on April 25 (retroactive to April 23) with a right hamstring strain suffered on April 22 against the Tampa Bay Rays. Over the weekend, he appeared in two games of a rehabilitation assignment with Double-A Portland, starting both games in right field, finishing hitless in six at-bats. With Boston this season, Victorino has played 12 games, all in right field, going 5-for-35 (.143) with three runs scored, a double, two RBI, six walks, two stolen bases, and a .302 on-base percentage. In 1,240 career major league games between the San Diego Padres (2003), Philadelphia Phillies (2005-2012), Los Angeles Dodgers (2012), and Red Sox (2013-15), the two-time All-Star has hit .276 with 228 doubles, 68 triples, 107 home runs, 484 RBI, and 226 stolen bases.

Jimenez, 27, was claimed off waivers from the Milwaukee Brewers on May 3, and appeared in only one game for Boston as a pinch runner on May 6, going 0-for-1 at the plate. The right-handed batter has played in 16 games this year between the Brewers and Red Sox, going 1-for-16 with a run scored and a walk. Defensively, he appeared in seven games at third base (two starts) and once at second base for Milwaukee. Originally signed as an international free agent by the Los Angeles Angels in 2005, the Dominican native has played 68 career major league games over parts of three seasons between the Angels (2013-14), Brewers and Red Sox (2015), batting .218 (34-for-156) with 19 runs, eight doubles, and seven RBI.
