Red Sox activate shortstop Stephen Drew from disabled list

The Boston Red Sox today activated shortstop Stephen Drew from the disabled list. To make room for him on the 25-man roster, infielder Brock Holt was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.

Drew, 30, completed a two-game rehab assignment with Double-A Portland yesterday, going 2-for-7 (.286) with one double and one RBI in those contests. In 66 games for Boston this season, he has hit .233 (54-for-232) with 14 doubles, six triples, five home runs, and 31 RBI. Of his 54 hits this season, 25 have gone for extra bases and entering play today, his six triples are third most among all American League players. Defensively, he has made only three errors in 279 total chances at shortstop, and his .989 fielding percentage leads all AL players at that position.

Holt, 25, has hit .290 (9-for-31) with eight RBI, three runs, and one stolen base in 10 games for Boston this season, including an eight-game hit streak from July 7-14. Defensively, he played in 10 games at third base (nine starts), and also appeared in two games at second base. For his major league career, he has batted .292 (28-for-110) with two doubles, one triple, 11 RBI, and 9 runs in 34 games between the Pittsburgh Pirates (2012) and Red Sox (2013). In 60 games for Pawtucket this year, he has hit .263 (55-for-209) with four doubles, one home run, and 18 RBI.
