FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The Red Sox added a former All-Star to their list of non-roster invitees to Major League Spring Training, reaching agreement on a contract with right-handed reliever Carlos Marmol.
Marmol is best known for his time with the Cubs, when he notched 117 saves from 2007-12. In Marmol's lone All-Star season of '08, he was an elite setup man, striking out 114 batters over 87 1/3 innings and allowing 40 hits.
However, Marmol had limited success in 2013-14, posting a 5.20 ERA over 67 games with the Cubs, Dodgers and Marlins.
Marmol, 33, spent all of 2015 with the Indians' Triple-A affiliate, registering a 2.03 ERA with 13 saves and 48 strikeouts in 28 games.
Boston has Craig Kimbrel, Koji Uehara, Junichi Tazawa, Carson Smith and Robbie Ross Jr. as locks in the bullpen. That leaves a couple of roster spots up for grabs among a collection of relievers that now includes Marmol.
Marmol is 23-35 with 117 saves and a 3.57 ERA in 519 career appearances with the Cubs, Dodgers and Marlins.
The Red Sox will open Spring Training with 56 players in Major League camp, including 16 non-roster invitees.
