The Boston Red Sox today announced the following roster moves:
Left-handed pitcher Roenis Elias was returned from his injury rehab assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket, reinstated from the 60-day disabled list, and optioned to Pawtucket.
To make room for Elias on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Noe Ramirez was designated for assignment.
President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.
Elias, 29, began the season on the 10-day disabled list with a right oblique strain and was transferred to the 60-day disabled list on June 15. Over his second rehab assignment of the season, he made six starts between short-season Single-A Lowell, Double-A Portland, and Pawtucket, allowing 18 earned runs in 25.0 innings (6.48 ERA) while striking out 16 and walking six. In 2016, the left-hander went 10-5 with a 3.60 ERA (50 ER/125.0 IP) and 113 strikeouts in 21 games (19 starts) for the PawSox. He also made his Red Sox debut with three games (one start) over three stints at the major league level. Acquired via trade in December 2015 from the Seattle Mariners, the Cuban native has made 54 career major league appearances (50 starts) between Seattle (2014-15) and Boston (2016), going 15-21 with a 4.21 ERA (134 ER/286.2 IP) and 243 strikeouts.
Ramirez, 27, has made two relief appearances for Boston this season, allowing two runs over 4.2 innings (3.86 ERA). Over 32 relief appearances Pawtucket in 2017, the right-hander is 3-3 with a 3.26 ERA (17 ER/47.0 IP), limiting opponents to a .212 batting average (36-for-170). Selected by Boston in the fourth round of the 2011 June Draft, Ramirez has made 33 career relief appearances at the major league level, going 0-1 with a 4.99 ERA (17 ER/30.2 IP). In 186 minor league outings (17 starts) from 2012-17, all within the Red Sox organization, he is 16-17 with a 2.79 ERA (112 ER/361.0 IP), 361 strikeouts, 97 walks, and a .240 opponent batting average.
