Red Sox announce roster moves

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today activated left-handed pitcher Felix Doubront from the 15-day disabled list, placed outfielder Daniel Nava on the 15-day disabled list with a left wrist sprain and recalled shortstop Jose Iglesias, outfielder Che-Hsuan Lin and right-handed pitcher Junichi Tazawa from Triple-A Pawtucket.  Doubront, Iglesias, Lin and Tazawa will be active for tonight’s game against the Kansas City Royals at Fenway Park.

 

The announcements were made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington. 

 

Doubront, who is slated to start tomorrow, was placed on the 15-day disabled list on August 18 (retroactive to August 10) with a right knee contusion.  The 24-year-old has gone 10-6 with a 4.70 ERA (64 ER/122.2 IP) and 119 strikeouts compared to 52 walks in 22 starts for the Red Sox this season.  His 10 wins rank second on the team and he is tied for second on the club with 11 quality starts.  Prior to his DL stint, Doubront placed seventh among American League qualifiers, fourth among AL left-handers, with an average of 8.73 strikeouts per 9.0 innings.  Signed by the Red Sox as an international free agent in July 2004, he has a career 12-8 record with a 4.73 ERA (83 ER/158.0 IP) and 148 strikeouts in 45 Major League appearances, including 25 starts, all with Boston over the last three seasons since 2010.

 

For Nava, this is his second stint on the disabled list after missing 21 games from July 29-August 19 with a left wrist sprain.  The 29-year-old has appeared in 67 games for the Red Sox this season after being selected to the active Major League roster on May 10 and has batted .250 (51-for-204) with 17 doubles, four home runs, 27 RBI, 32 runs and 32 walks.  The switch-hitter has also played in 29 games with Triple-A Pawtucket in 2012, including 27 to start the year and two on rehab assignment, batting at a .313 clip (31-for-99).  Signed by the Red Sox as a minor league free agent in January of 2008, Nava has appeared in 127 career Major League games over the 2010 and 2012 seasons, and tallied a .247 average (90-for-365) with 31 doubles, a triple, five home runs, 53 RBI, 55 runs, 51 walks and four stolen bases.

 

For Iglesias, it is his second Major League stint in 2012.  He did not appear in a game in his previous stint for Boston from May 1-2. Iglesias is batting .329 (24-for-73) in 19 games in August, with five doubles, two RBI, nine walks and 14 runs and has had at least one hit in 21 of his last 27 games.  In 88 contests for the PawSox this season, the 22-year-old is 94-for-353 (.266) with nine doubles, one triple, a home run, 23 RBI, 27 walks, 46 runs scored and 12 stolen bases, ranking among team leaders in hits (T-2nd), stolen bases (3rd) and runs (4th).  A native of Havana, Cuba, Iglesias was signed by Boston as an international free agent on September 8, 2009, and is a .264 hitter (258-for-979) with 31 doubles, six triples, two home runs and 74 RBI in 261 career minor league games in the Red Sox system.  He is 2-for-6 (.333) in 10 career Major League contests, all with the Red Sox last season.                 

 

The 23-year-old Lin is 1-for-5 (.200) with a run scored in six games over two previous stints for the Red Sox this season, including five appearances in right field and one in center field.  This year, Lin became the first Taiwanese-born player to appear in a game for the Red Sox and the eighth Major Leaguer from Taiwan overall in Big League history.  Lin is 92-for-373 (.247) with 11 doubles, three triples, two home runs, 30 RBI, 42 runs, 41 walks and 14 stolen bases in 107 games with the PawSox this year.  He leads the team in triples and stolen bases (tied) and ranks third in walks.  In 621 minor league games in the Boston system since signing as an international free agent on June 8, 2007, the right-handed batter has compiled a .256 average (602-for-2,356) with 92 doubles, 25 triples, 22 homers, 216 RBI, 377 runs, 302 walks and 144 stolen bases.

 

The 26-year-old Tazawa, who had been optioned to Pawtucket prior to last night’s game, returns for his third stint with Boston this season.  He has a 1.37 ERA (4 ER/26.1 IP) and one save in 20 appearances for the Red Sox in 2012, including 16 scoreless outings.  The right-hander has recorded 22 strikeouts compared to just two walks and has pitched more than 1.0 inning on nine occasions.  In 25 outings for the PawSox this season, all in relief, he has a 3-2 record with four saves and a 2.55 ERA (12 ER/42.1 IP) with 56 strikeouts and 17 walks allowed.  Signed by Boston as an international free agent on December 3, 2008, Tazawa is 2-3 with one save and a 4.45 ERA (27 ER/54.2 IP) in 29 career Major League games for the Red Sox, including four starts in 2009.
