Red Sox call up Boyer, add righty to bullpen

Boston options Johnson to Triple-A Pawtucket after his shutout

The Red Sox called up right-hander Blaine Boyer from Triple-A Pawtucket on Sunday and optioned left-hander Brian Johnson.

Boyer has posted a 3.14 ERA with two saves and 12 strikeouts in 10 relief appearances for Pawtucket. The 35-year-old brought a 14-25 career record and a 4.17 ERA over 394 Major League appearances into Sunday, when he recorded the final two outs in the top of the ninth in Boston's 5-0 loss to Seattle.

Johnson tossed a five-hit shutout in Saturday's 6-0 win over the Mariners. He became the first Red Sox pitcher to throw a shutout in his Fenway Park debut since Pedro Martinez accomplished the feat on April 11, 1998, also against Seattle.

With Boston set to activate David Price for Monday's game against the White Sox, the Red Sox optioned righty Brandon Workman to Pawtucket after Sunday's tilt.
