Extra batting practice pays off for Vazquez

June 19th, 2016

BOSTON -- When catcher Christian Vazquez took a couple of games off for batting adjustments and help from his hitting coach Chili Davis, he couldn't have imagined a better outcome than breaking out of his 0-for-12 slump with the go-ahead run in the Red Sox's 6-2 win over the Mariners on Saturday.
Vazquez smoothly executed a hit-and-run when the Red Sox needed runs on the board the most, trailing Seattle by one in the fifth. Chris Young reached first on a single to left and Vazquez laced the next pitch from Seattle rookie Adrian Sampson into right field.
On his way over to first base, Vazquez peeked into the Red Sox's dugout to watch his teammates cheer him on in his success of snapping a recent slump.
"It's good to see him bounce back after a stretch where he was grinding, scuffling a little bit. Hopefully this gives him a chance to gain a little momentum," manager John Farrell said.
Vazquez said it helped him to take a couple days of rest to get his mind back on track. When asked how a couple of days away from the field helped his catcher, Farrell's answer was quick and straight to the point.
"The chance to clear the head for one," Farrell said. "He's done a lot of early work with Chili the past couple days, and maybe just the bloop single to right field allows him to exhale a little bit and take a deep breath."
Vazquez has been working with Davis diligently in his time away from the behind the plate. On Saturday afternoon before batting practice, Vazquez was out early on the field hitting from a tee with Davis by his side.

Vazquez hit an RBI double to left field in the sixth inning, scoring Hanley Ramirez from second and moving Travis Shaw up to third.
Seven of Vazquez's 10 extra-base hits have come in the sixth inning or after.
"It's good," Vazquez said of working with Davis. "It's getting me back to the simple stuff, to how I was in the beginning of the season. I felt good today."
