Farrell says Victorino is his starting right fielder

Red Sox veteran outfielder to be everyday player if 'fully capable and fully healthy'

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- A day after Shane Victorino said he has no intentions of being a bench player, Red Sox manager John Farrell confirmed he won't be turning the right fielder into one -- provided he stays healthy.

"If Shane Victorino is fully capable and fully healthy, he's our right fielder," said Farrell. "I mean, that's pretty simple. He was one of the best right fielders in the game two years ago.

"When you come back from injury, you shouldn't have lost your job because of an injury. He's rehabbed it successfully to date. And going forward, we've just got to monitor the recovery rate. We've got a full Spring Training to do that, and probably into the first part of the year."

A healthy Victorino would create a serious log-jam in Boston's outfield, which also has Mookie Betts, Rusney Castillo, Allen Craig and Daniel Nava vying for playing time. Hanley Ramirez is set as the left fielder.

Victorino was determined to have a strong winter rehabbing from back surgery, and he's impressed the Red Sox by the way he's come into camp.

"He is 'full go' baseball activity," said Farrell. "I think the way he's talking in the clubhouse indicates that he feels good about himself. We'll find out as we go through camp here the durability from day to day, and the volume that will increase throughout camp."
