Red Sox place shortstop Stephen Drew on disabled list

Right-Hander Jose De La Torre Recalled From Triple-A Pawtucket

BOSTON, MA - The Boston Red Sox today placed shortstop Stephen Drew on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to June 29) with a right hamstring strain. To fill his spot on the 25-man roster, right-hander Jose De La Torre was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket. De La Torre will be available for tonight's game against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at 10:05 p.m. ET.

Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.

Drew, 30, experienced tightness in his right hamstring after hit a double on June 28 against Toronto at Fenway Park. In 66 games for Boston this season, he has hit .233 (54-for-232) with 14 doubles, six triples, five home runs and 31 RBI. Of his 54 hits this season, 25 have gone for extra bases and entering play today, his six triples were tied for second most among all American League players. Defensively, he has made only three errors in 279 total chances at shortstop, and his .989 fielding percentage leads all players at that position.

De La Torre, 27, rejoins the Red Sox for his third major league stint of 2013. In three games for Boston this season, all in relief, he has posted a 5.06 ERA (3 ER/5.1 IP) with four walks and five strikeouts. With Pawtucket this year, he is 3-1 with one save, a 1.64 ERA (7 ER/38.1 IP), 19 walks, and 45 strikeouts. He has held International League opponents to a .148 batting average (20-for-135) for the PawSox and each of his last six appearances, which have spanned 9.1 innings, have been scoreless.
