Red Sox place outfielder Ryan Sweeney on 15-day DL; recall Ryan Kalish

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today placed outfielder Ryan Sweeney on the 15-day disabled list with left big toe inflammation and recalled outfielder Ryan Kalish from Triple-A Pawtucket.  Kalish is slated to start in center field tonight against the Cubs in Chicago, wearing No. 70.

The announcement was made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington. 

The 27-year-old Sweeney has hit .292 (50-for-171) with 17 doubles, a triple, 13 RBI, 19 runs and nine walks in 52 games with the Red Sox this season.  He has made 29 starts in right field (42 games) and 12 in center (15 games).  This is his second stint on the disabled list this year as he was on the seven-day concussion disabled list from May 21-27.  Acquired by Boston from Oakland in December, Sweeney has compiled a .284 average (478-for-1,686) with 100 doubles, 11 triples, 14 home runs, 182 RBI, 221 runs and 148 walks over 524 career Major League games with the White Sox (2006-07), Athletics (2008-11) and Red Sox (2012).  

Kalish, 24, began the season on the 60-day disabled list recovering from left shoulder surgery and was activated and optioned to Pawtucket on June 9.  The left-handed batter has combined to hit .345 (20-for-58) with three doubles, five home runs, 11 RBI, 14 runs, 11 walks and four stolen bases in 15 minor league contests this year between High-A Salem, Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket, including nine rehab games.  In his nine tilts with the PawSox, he has hit at a .378 clip (14-for-37) with four homers and 10 RBI.  Selected by Boston in the ninth round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft, Kalish has 53 games of Major League experience, all with the Red Sox in 2010, over which he is 41-for-163 (.252) with 11 doubles, a triple, four home runs, 24 RBI, 26 runs, 12 walks and 10 stolen bases.
