Prior to tonight's game against the Baltimore Orioles, the Boston Red Sox placed right-handed pitcher Steven Wright on the 10-day disabled list (retroactive to April 30) with a left knee sprain. To fill his spot on the 25-man roster, the club recalled right-handed pitcher Brandon Workman from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Wright, 32, has made five starts for the Red Sox this season, going 1-3 with an 8.25 ERA (22 ER/24.0 IP). After making his first career All-Star Game in 2016, he finished the campaign with career highs in starts (24), wins (13), innings (156.2), strikeouts (127), complete games (4), and quality starts (15), while leading the American League with 0.69 home runs allowed per nine innings and ranking 10th with a 3.33 ERA (minimum 150.0 innings). The knuckleballer, who was originally drafted by Cleveland as a second-round selection in the 2006 June Draft, has posted a career 21-14 record with a 3.97 ERA (127 ER/287.2 IP) in 55 games (40 starts) over five seasons, all with the Red Sox.
Workman, 28, has not allowed a run in eight innings over four appearances with the PawSox this season, going 1-0 and converting his only save opportunity. The right-hander has held opponents to a .042 batting average, surrendering only one hit in 24 at-bats with 11 strikeouts and one walk. Selected by the Red Sox in the second round of the 2010 June Draft, Workman has not appeared at the major league level since 2014. The 2013 World Series champion has 39 games of regular season major league experience (18 starts), going 7-13 with a 5.11 ERA (73 ER/128.2 IP) and 117 strikeouts. He spent the 2016 season on the disabled list recovering from Tommy John surgery performed on June 15, 2015.
