ARLINGTON -- Bryce Brentz was promoted from Triple-A Pawtucket on Friday, becoming the latest player to emerge from the revolving door known as left field for the Red Sox.
Chris Young suffered a right hamstring strain in Thursday's win over the White Sox, and joins Brock Holt (rehabbing from a concussion) and Blake Swihart (severe right ankle sprain) as Boston's third left fielder on the disabled list.
"Yeah, we've had a little bit of a revolving door there," said manager John Farrell. "Position changes. Utility guys. A number of different players. I think internally we look at the next man up and find a way to plug [him] in the lineup, get the most contributions you can."
Farrell expects Brentz to start the three games in Texas this weekend. There's a chance that Holt, who is playing in rehab games for Triple-A Pawtucket, will return for the start of the road series against the Rays on Monday.
President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said that Andrew Benintendi, ranked third among Red Sox prospects by MLBPipeline.com, was not considered as a candidate to replace Young.
"We don't think he's ready at this point," said Dombrowski. "We didn't even talk about him in relation to this move, per se; we just don't think he's ready and we wouldn't want to bring him up here until he's ready."

Benintendi was Boston's first-round selection (No. 7 overall) in the 2015 Draft. He has progressed swiftly through the farm system and is currently playing at Double-A Portland, where he is hitting .246 with three homers and 20 RBIs in 32 games.
"Defensively he can play in the big leagues," said Dombrowski. "Baserunning, all that. But if you're going to be an outfielder, you're going to have to produce from an offensive perspective, and that's the biggest challenge. He can play here defensively at this point. Really, the rest of his game could play here. It's just from an offensive perspective, adjustments are still needed. And they're normal, growing, and he's doing amazing basically being in Double-A after being signed in [the last] year."
As for Brentz, this is his first stint with the Red Sox since he was a September callup in 2014.
In 38 games with Pawtucket, Brentz, a right-handed hitter, has a .278 average with three homers, 17 RBIs and a .744 OPS.
"Any time you get a chance to come up, you just want to help the team the best you can and contribute and hopefully get a win," said Brentz. "Obviously we all want to contribute and win. This is definitely an opportunity and I'm looking forward to it."
