Moncada collects first multi-homer game

Red Sox's No. 1 prospect drives in four runs for Double-A Portland

July 19th, 2016

Yoan Moncada's power surge continued on Monday night as the Red Sox's No. 1 prospect hit a pair of home runs and drove in four runs to lead Double-A Portland past Trenton, 11-4.
Moncada, ranked No. 5 on the Top 100, was unable collect in a hit in his first three at-bats on Monday night, striking out twice, before connecting on a solo homer to the opposite field to lead off the seventh inning. The 21-year-old switch-hitter blew the game wide open in his next trip to the plate, when he blasted a three-run, tape-measure homer down the right-field line with two outs in the eighth. He finished the game 2-for-5 at the plate.

The multi-homer performance was the first of Moncada's career, and he's now gone deep seven times in 21 games for Portland after tallying four homers over 61 games with Class A Advanced Salem during the first half of the season. Of course, that total doesn't include the impressive blast he hit last week en route to garnering MVP honors in the SiriusXM Futures Game.
"It's the same baseball everywhere," Moncada told MiLB.com of the differences between levels earlier this month. "But it's just older people, that's all."

But Moncada has done more than just hit bombs for the Sea Dogs; he's also hit .329 with a 1.098 OPS while collecting hits in 17 of 21 games, during which he he's accrued 21 runs, 20 RBIs and seven steals.
"I keep preparing myself and don't try to overthink stuff," Moncada told MiLB.com a few weeks ago through interpreter and teammate Mauricio Dubon. "The day I'm ready to go [to the Majors], I'll be ready to go. I don't try to think that I should be over here, or over there. Right now I'm just focused on what matters right now and taking it day by day."

Overall, Moncada has hit .313 with 45 extra-base hits and 43 stolen bases in 82 games between the two levels.
