Red Sox recall left-handed pitcher Drake Britton
BOSTON, MA-The Boston Red Sox today recalled left-handed pitcher Drake Britton from Triple-A Pawtucket and added him as the club's 26th man on the active roster for the second game of today's day-night doubleheader against the Rays at Fenway Park beginning at 7:10 p.m. Under Major League Baseball Rules, teams are permitted to add an extra player for the second game of doubleheaders played within one day of the original postponement.
Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.
This is the first major league stint of the season for Britton, 24, who went 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA (9 ER/21.0 IP) and 17 strikeouts in 18 relief appearances for the Red Sox in 2013, his big league debut. With Pawtucket this year, Britton is 0-0 with two saves, a 1.29 ERA (2 ER/14.0 IP), and 12 strikeouts in a team-high-tying 10 relief outings. He has held left-handed hitters to a .188 batting average (3-for-16) and has limited opponents to a .192 average with runners on base (5-for-26). Signed by Boston as a 23rd-round selection in the 2007 June Draft, Britton is playing in his seventh professional season.
