Red Sox recall right-handed pitcher Matt Barnes from Triple-A Pawtucket

The Boston Red Sox today recalled right-handed pitcher Matt Barnes from Triple-A Pawtucket. To make room for him on the 25-man roster, infielder Travis Shaw was optioned to Pawtucket following last night's game. Barnes will be active for today's game against the Blue Jays in Toronto beginning at 1:07 p.m.

Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.

Barnes, 24, returns for his second major league stint of the season. He was previously recalled to Boston on April 25 and pitched 2.0 scoreless innings of relief in a loss to the Baltimore Orioles that night before being optioned back to Pawtucket the following day. In four outings for the PawSox this season, including three starts, he has no record with 14 strikeouts in 13.0 innings and a 4.15 ERA (6 ER). The right-hander pitched a scoreless inning in his last appearance on Wednesday night against Detroit's Triple-A affiliate in Toledo, his only minor league relief outing of the season. A native of Connecticut, Barnes made his major league debut as a September call-up with Boston last season and owns a 3.27 ERA (4 ER/11.0 IP) in six career big league games, all out of the bullpen. Signed by the Red Sox as a first-round selection in the 2011 June Draft, he is 21-24 with a 3.67 ERA (152 ER) and 392 strikeouts in 373.2 innings pitched over 76 career minor league outings (75 starts) from 2012-15.

Shaw, 25, was recalled to the Red Sox prior to last night's game, in which he went 0-for-2 with a walk in his major league debut as Boston's starting first baseman against the Blue Jays. The left-handed batter began the season with Triple-A Pawtucket, where he has hit .189 (17-for-90) with three doubles, a triple, two home runs, 15 RBI, and seven walks in 24 games, while seeing time at third base (12 games), first base (11 games), and left field (1 game). Signed by the Red Sox as a ninth-round selection in the 2011 June Draft, Shaw has hit .259 (440-for-1,699) with 111 doubles, 10 triples, 66 home runs, 265 RBI, 257 walks, and a .360 on-base percentage in 468 games over parts of five seasons in the minor leagues.
