Hembree in 'pen; Breslow on paternity leave

BOSTON -- The Red Sox recalled right-hander Heath Hembree from Triple-A Pawtucket and moved lefty reliever Craig Breslow to the paternity leave list on Friday. The moves leave Tommy Layne as Boston's lone lefty in its bullpen.

Hembree worked two scoreless innings in Friday night's 13-10 loss to Toronto.

Hembree is with the Red Sox for the third time this season after allowing six runs in 2 1/3 innings over his two previous stints. He pitched to an 0.83 ERA and notched seven saves in 18 games for Pawtucket.

Breslow has posted a 4.03 ERA while averaging 7.25 strikeouts per nine innings in 18 relief outings. He only has five appearances since May 11, nearly all of which have come in low-leverage situations.

Worth noting

• Left fielder Hanley Ramirez did not start Friday after tweaking his left hamstring in Thursday night's game in Baltimore. Ramirez also fouled a pitch off his knee during that series, though the ensuing soreness did not prevent him from playing.

"In combination with the foul ball off the knee on Tuesday night and then that [Thursday] night, felt like the decision was made to give him a day to get over that," Farrell said.

• Justin Masterson worked six innings on 75 pitches in his second rehab start for Pawtucket on Wednesday. He allowed one run on two hits, struck out six and walked one. Farrell said the team would discuss the righty's eventual return soon, but he did not elaborate on whether that would as a starter or reliever.

"Justin wouldn't be physically ready to pitch until Monday. Threw his bullpen [session Friday], came out of that fine again," Farrell said.

• Andrew Benintendi, Boston's first-round pick in the First-Year Player Draft, was named College Player of the Year by Baseball America on Thursday. He hit .380 with 19 home runs and 55 RBIs in his sophomore season at the University of Arkansas.
