Red Sox recall shortstop Stephen Drew and outfielder Daniel Nava from Triple-A Pawtucket

BOSTON, MA-The Boston Red Sox today announced the following roster moves: 

• Shortstop Stephen Drew was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket. To make room for him on the 25-man roster, third baseman Garin Cecchini was optioned to Pawtucket following yesterday's game.
• First baseman/outfielder Mike Carp was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a fourth metatarsal fracture of his right foot (retroactive to yesterday). To fill his spot on the 25-man roster, outfielder Daniel Nava was recalled from Pawtucket.

Drew and Nava will be active for tonight's 7:05 p.m. game against the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field.

Drew, 31, was signed by the Red Sox on May 21 to a one-year contract through the 2014 season. The left-handed batter did not appear for Boston and two days later began a minor league assignment, over which he went 5-for-21 (.238) with three doubles, two RBI, two walks, and a run scored in seven games between Single-A Greenville (3 games) and Triple-A Pawtucket (4 games). Defensively, he combined to play 38.1 innings at shortstop. Drew helped the Red Sox to the 2013 World Series Championship, appearing in 124 regular season games, all at shortstop, and hitting .253 (112-for-442) with 29 doubles, eight triples, 13 home runs, 67 RBI, 57 runs scored, and 54 walks. His 67 RBI tied a single-season career high (also 2008) and ranked second among American League shortstops. He also ranked among AL leaders at the position in walks (T-2nd) and home runs (T-3rd). Signed by the Arizona Diamondbacks as a first-round selection in the 2004 June Draft, he has a .264 average (926-for-3511), 210 doubles, 60 triples, 90 home runs, 416 RBI, 471 runs scored, 347 walks, and 40 stolen bases in 936 career major league games.

For Nava, 31, this marks his third stint with the Red Sox this season. The switch-hitter is batting .130 (10-for-77) with two doubles, two home runs, three RBI, and seven walks over 22 games with Boston, appearing defensively in right field (17 games, 15 starts), left field (3 games, 1 start), and first base (4 games, 3 starts). In 24 games with the PawSox this season, Nava has hit .253 (21-for-83) with three doubles, three home runs, 14 RBI, and 12 walks. He is a .263 hitter (253-for-963) with 66 doubles, 21 home runs, and 128 RBI over parts of four major league seasons, all with the Red Sox (2010, 2012-14), and last year posted the fifth-highest on-base percentage (.385) among American League qualifiers.

The 27-year-old Carp has appeared in 33 games for the Red Sox this season, batting .214 (15-for-70) with five doubles, six RBI, seven walks, and eight runs scored. Defensively, he has not committed an error between action at first base (14 games, 9 starts), left field (11 games, 8 starts), and third base (1 game). He also made his first professional pitching appearance in the ninth inning on April 24 against the Yankees. In parts of six big league seasons with the Mariners (2009-12) and Red Sox (2013-14), Carp has hit .262 (218-for-831) with 51 doubles, four triples, 27 home runs, 120 RBI, 81 walks, and 94 runs scored over 292 games.  

Cecchini, 23, returns to Pawtucket after going 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI yesterday in his major league debut against the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park. Recalled prior to the game, he entered as a defensive replacement at third base to begin the fourth inning. With the PawSox this season, he is batting .278 (176 AB) with a .354 on-base percentage, seven doubles, one home run, 21 RBI, 20 walks, 20 runs scored, and six stolen bases, reaching base in 46 of his 50 Triple-A contests. He leads the team with 49 hits and posted the International League's longest on-base streak of the seasons at 29 games from April 18-May 22. The left-handed batter, an All-Star in each of his first three minor league seasons, has hit .307 (368-for-1,199) with 90 doubles, 12 triples, 15 homers, 167 RBI, and 192 walks in 329 minor league games over four seasons in the Red Sox system.
