Prior to today's game at the Detroit Tigers, the Boston Red Sox reinstated right-handed pitcher Matt Barnes from the bereavement list. To make room for him on the 25-man roster, right-handed pitcher Noe Ramirez was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Barnes, 26, appeared in both of Boston's first two games of the 2017 season, allowing only one hit in 1.2 scoreless innings. He was placed on the bereavement list on April 6. In 2016, the right-hander led the Red Sox with 62 appearances and 66.2 relief innings pitched in his first full major league season. Selected by Boston in the first round (19th overall) of the 2011 June Draft, Barnes is 7-7 with one save, a 4.49 ERA (60 ER/120.1 IP), and 120 strikeouts in 101 major league outings, including two starts.
 
In his only appearance, Ramirez, 27, finished yesterday's game at the Tigers with 1.2 perfect innings of relief with one strikeout. The right-hander is in his sixth professional season since being selected by the Red Sox in the fourth round of the 2011 June Draft. He made his first Opening Day roster in 2016 and appeared in 14 games over eight stints with the big league club, but he spent a majority of the season with the PawSox. Ramirez has posted a 2.28 ERA (58 ER/229.0 IP) over his last four seasons at the minor league level since becoming a full-time reliever in 2013.
