Red Sox release first baseman Lyle Overbay

The Red Sox released first baseman Lyle Overbay today. The announcement was made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington.

Overbay, 36, signed with Boston as a minor league free agent in January and was a non-roster invitee to Major League Spring Training.  In 19 games for the Red Sox this spring, he batted .220 with one double, two triples, and seven RBI.

With the transaction, the Red Sox now have 38 players in major league camp, including 32 players from the 40-man roster, one on the 60-day disabled list and five non-roster invitees.
