DETROIT -- Rain has delayed the start of Saturday night's game between the Tigers and Red Sox at Comerica Park.
A storm system rolled into Detroit late Saturday afternoon, bringing heavy rain. The Tigers' ground crew, anticipating an iffy start, had already put the tarp on the field, leaving both teams to take batting practice indoors.
No word has been uttered on an anticipated start time. The rain is expected to roll through at some point Saturday night, but it could be a matter of timing.
This late in the season, with the Red Sox not scheduled to return to Detroit, the decision whether to play or postpone rests with umpiring crew chief Jerry Layne and Major League Baseball. The decision has implications for both teams in their hopes for playoff contention.
The Red Sox are in the midst of a heavy travel schedule, having made up a rainout in Cleveland on Monday, played two games in Baltimore, then making a late-night trip to Detroit for a Thursday afternoon series opener.
