BOSTON -- The Red Sox will commemorate Veterans Day in various ways on Friday, visiting hospitals and homes in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, and also airing a 90-minute broadcast aimed to raise money and awareness for those impacted by military service.
Since unveiling their Home Base program in 2009, the Red Sox have been one of the most involved professional sports franchises when it comes to helping veterans.
Throughout the day on Friday, former Red Sox first baseman Sam Horn (1987-89) will visit with veterans at three different locations. He will be joined by Wally The Green Monster, Fenway ambassadors and the World Series trophies from 2004, '07 and '13.
From 7:30-9 p.m. ET on Friday, the third annual Veterans Day Home Base special will air in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine on WCVB, WMUR and WMTW. The broadcast will be supported by a live phone bank, text-to-give and online donations. Viewers can donate by calling 866-615-8387, texting "Veterans" to 91999 or visiting homebase.org/give.
The special will feature stories from military families, interviews with Home Base staff and messages from some top supporters of this heartfelt effort -- including former knuckleballer Tim Wakefield, who is the honorary chairman of the Red Sox Foundation.
The Home Base program helps veterans, service members and their families cope with post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury.
On Saturday, the Red Sox will open up Fenway Park to veterans with free tours available from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
