BOSTON -- The Red Sox put left fielder Chris Young on the 15-day disabled list with a right hamstring strain he sustained while running the bases in Thursday's 8-7 extra-innings win against the White Sox. Outfielder Bryce Brentz was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket.
Young crushed a ball off the Green Monster in the second inning, only to slam on the brakes as he rounded first base. Young immediately grabbed the back of his right leg and fell to the ground writhing in pain.
"From what you saw on the field, we're hopeful it's not as severe. He felt a little popping sensation when he was rounding first base, so he's going on the disabled list," Red Sox manager John Farrell said.
While Young had to be helped off the field, he was walking around the Red Sox's clubhouse after the game.
"If you get carried off the field, you aren't expected to be able to walk around after the game," Young said. "I was able to walk up and down the stairs, so I'm happy about that.
"I'm just trying to be as optimistic as possible and see how it goes in the morning."
Since Blake Swihart went on the DL with a left ankle sprain at the beginning of June, Young has been a steady presence in the Red Sox lineup, getting at least one hit in 11 of his 15 starts.
Young is the third left fielder to suffer an injury this season. With Brock Holt (concussion) and Swihart currently on the DL, the Red Sox will look for other alternatives in left field.
One of those is outfielder Ryan LaMarre, who entered the game as a pinch-runner and stayed in to man left field. Holt is still in the middle of a rehab assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket.
"Once he pulled his hamstring, it was a huge letdown for us. We felt bad right away because we saw how bad it could potentially be," Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts said of Young. "He's been a huge part to our success, especially since he's been playing much more regularly since Swihart and Holt [went on the DL]. It is a huge blow, but hopefully he is back soon."
