Ortiz clubs one of three Sox homers in return

Rodriguez to be activated for Tuesday start; Hembree optioned to Triple-A

BALTIMORE -- Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz homered in his return to the lineup Monday after sitting out Sunday's series finale against the Blue Jays due to soreness in his left foot. Boston opened its four-game series on Memorial Day with a 7-2 win over the Orioles at Camden Yards.
"He fouled a ball off that area [of his foot] on the homestand," manager John Farrell said before the game, adding Ortiz was also recently hit by a pitch. "You take a couple of hard shots to it, it's going to create some soreness. It feels good enough to go today."
There were clearly no lingering effects for Ortiz, who walked in his first at-bat before leading off the eighth with a monstrous drive deep over the wall in right-center to give the Red Sox a 4-2 lead. The big fly kick-started a four-run frame that put the game out of reach.
Ortiz, who leads the Red Sox with 14 home runs and leads the American League with 47 RBIs, hit one of three homers for the Sox on the afternoon. Jackie Bradley Jr.'s solo shot put Boston up for good in the sixth before Marco Hernandez belted a three-run homer -- the first long ball of his career -- to cap the fireworks in the eighth.
"We answered right back when they tied things up," Farrell said.

E-Rod set for Tuesday return; Hembree optioned
• With Eduardo Rodriguez set to be activated Tuesday following a rehab stint with Triple-A Pawtucket, Boston optioned reliever Heath Hembree to Pawtucket following Monday's win.
The left-hander is slated to start Tuesday for Boston after making five starts for Pawtucket. Rodriguez, who went 10-6 in 21 starts last season, has been working his way back from a knee injury.
"Depending on what we come out [with on Monday], we'd like to stay with a full complement on the bench," Farrell said. "Eduardo is going to come back to us having thrown multiple games at 100-plus pitches. It's not like we're having to protect him by a sheer pitch-count standpoint."
Hembree is 2-0 with a 2.14 ERA in 12 appearances.
