BOSTON -- Red Sox right fielder was out of the starting lineup against the Twins in Saturday's 11-9 loss for precautionary reasons involving soreness in his right knee. Betts is getting treatment and is day to day, but the club is optimistic about a speedy recovery.
Betts' MRI came back negative and there is no structural damage to his knee.
"He did go through an MRI that structurally, everything is sound," Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "There are no cartilage issues. Some slight swelling that's in the area. And we have to work to get that out of there. Day to day is the status. It might take a couple [of days] until he gets back to us. Everything points to this being a short-term situation."
Betts said he'll have a better idea of his return date after he undergoes all of his treatment.

"I feel pretty good today," Betts said. "We're just going through the treatment, making sure everything is clear and be back out there."
Betts said he began to feel the soreness earlier this week and his knee was bothering him before the game Friday.
The right fielder said he knew he couldn't continue playing Friday night after hit a soft line drive that trickled toward Betts in the fourth. Betts threw Dozier out at second before exiting the game an inning later.
"I just thought I couldn't run full speed. I didn't want to make anything worse so I went ahead and was precautionary about it. Try and get it before anything major happens," Betts said.

The 23-year-old has never had a history of knee problems. His treatment involves icing the knee to get the swelling down.
"Just a lot of fluid in there," Betts said. "Trying to get it out."
Betts said it's hard to for him to sit on the bench, but he's optimistic about a speedy recovery.
"You always want to be in there and play," he said. "Like I said, we have a pretty good team and hopefully everything's going to be fine. Hopefully I can get back in there pretty quickly."
