LOS ANGELES -- Reds starting pitcher Amir Garrett feared for the worst after he was hit in his left hand by a line drive from the Dodgers' Austin Barnes on Friday night in Dodger Stadium.
Garrett dropped to the ground after taking a comebacker that had an exit velocity of 102.8 mph, according to Statcast™, and the ball hit the lefty Garrett on his pitching hand. The ball was deflected as Garrett fell to the ground, and Barnes reached with a single.
"The ball got hit back to me really hard," Garrett said after the Reds' 7-2 loss. "I didn't have time to react; I was in an awkward position."
Garrett said he couldn't feel his hand while he was being attended to by trainers and manager Bryan Price. The southpaw tested his left hand by tossing a few warmup pitches after getting up, but Price figured it was too risky to keep Garrett in the game.
"That's a bad situation for everybody," Price said. "You don't know if that's going to last for 10 minutes or two days. You have no idea. The one thing is that when you go back out there if he compromises his delivery or if he was erratic and started hitting their guys or throwing balls down the middle. There were just no positives that were going to come from keeping him in the game."

Garrett was sent for X-rays during the game, and the results came back negative. Price said as long as Garrett is feeling fine on Saturday, he'll throw his normal bullpen session and should be on track to make his next start.
Jake Buchanan replaced Garrett with the Reds trailing, 2-1, and with an unexpected injury to his starting pitcher, Price didn't want to do much damage to his bullpen.
Buchanan didn't fare too well, giving up four runs and five hits in 2 1/3 innings, however Blake Wood, Drew Storen and Tony Cingrani were solid in their relief, allowing two hits and one run in 4 2/3 innings. With those performances, Price was able to save the bullpen for the rest of the series.
"[We] really didn't beat up our bullpen considering we had to remove our starter in the second," Price said. "We should certainly have Cingrani and Storen again tomorrow. Guys that pitched tonight in relief, two of them had to have four days' rest, two of them had two days' rest. Buchanan and Woody will probably be down for a day or two, but the other guys should be ready to go."
