Hamilton makes Superman-like catch vs. Cardinals

CINCINNATI -- Reds center fielder Billy Hamilton acknowledged after Tuesday's 3-2 win over the Cardinals that he didn't have a great offensive game, but it's safe to say no one will be talking about his 0-for-3 performance.

With the Reds clinging to a one-run lead in the eighth inning, Jason Heyward hit what appeared to be a leadoff double or even triple, but Hamilton was there to rob Heyward with a leaping over-the-head catch. The highlight-reel snag kept Heyward off the basepaths and helped preserve the Reds' win.

"They told me I was flying like Superman out there or something," Hamilton said. "People are like 'oh man that play was unbelievable,' [and] I'm like it really doesn't feel that way when you catch it, until you really, really look at it. Like I said, I haven't looked at it yet but it was one of those plays I try to do for every one of our pitchers and it ended up working out for us."

"It was terrific," Heyward said. "That's a triple and we have some guys coming up who can drive in runs. That's a game-changer."

Randal Grichuk hit a similar liner at Hamilton in the third inning that resulted in a triple when Hamilton was unable to make the catch. Hamilton said he was going to be sure to watch the replay of the incredible catch to help take his mind off the Grichuk triple and a missed bunt opportunity that occurred in the seventh inning.

"Anything to take my mind off what I did in the game," Hamilton said. "The missed bunt opportunity I could have got down. That play is one of those things that picks you up and makes you feel better about yourself. Even though you didn't do your job offensively, you go out there. save a run and helped the team to victory. That is one that I'm going to go look at. I'm looking forward to watching it and hopefully I'll make that play [again] in the future."
