ST. LOUIS -- Brandon Finnegan was removed from Monday's 8-2 loss to the Cardinals in the fourth inning due to a left triceps strain. The injury is not considered significant, but the team will not know until Tuesday how much time he will miss.
Finnegan was activated from the 60-day disabled list prior to Monday's game.
"It's a different area, different part of the arm, so I don't know how debilitating it is," manager Bryan Price said. "[I] certainly think it's plausible for him to make his next start. I'm sure we'll get a look at it tomorrow with our doctors in Cincinnati and see where we go. That was a surprise to all of us."

Finnegan had thrown just three pitches to his first batter, Paul DeJong, in the fourth before exiting. He gave up three runs on three hits and four walks, throwing 58 pitches and striking out two. He had a tough couple of innings, including giving up a 413-foot home run to Jedd Gyorko in the first.
The injury occurred halfway through the third inning, and while Finnegan could tell something was wrong, he did not want to leave his first game back with another injury.
"I was sitting on the bench in the third, and I could feel it just sitting there. And I was like, 'I think it's tired, and I think it's just sore,'" Finnegan said. "Going out for the fourth inning, warming up, I knew something wasn't right. And in my head -- of course, it crosses your mind -- it's not how you want to come back, especially just after missing two months."
The start was Finnegan's first since April 15 and his fourth this season. He left his last start after just one inning due to injury. He is now 1-1 with a 4.15 ERA after entering Monday with a 2.70 ERA. He has allowed seven home runs in his career to the Cardinals, his most of any team.
While Finnegan is optimistic that he will be able to make his next start, his availability is unclear until more tests take place Tuesday morning. Due to the limited number of arms in the Reds' bullpen, if Finnegan misses just one start, he will have to go on the DL.
"We need some resources in the bullpen, and you know, with our schedule, the way it lays out now, we don't have any more days off to wiggle around and try to maneuver the rotation," Price said. "To give him maybe a couple days off or something like that, we don't have that flexibility. ... We're not going to jump to any conclusions. However, usually when you have to remove a pitcher from a game due to injury, especially when it's an arm-related injury, you're not optimistic they're going to make their next start. I'm not saying it's not going to happen, but I would say it's less likely, and I'll know more tomorrow."
