CINCINNATI -- The Reds held off on putting lefty Brandon Finnegan on the disabled list Tuesday following another injury after his return from the DL on Monday vs. the Cardinals. But it was clear that the Reds would need another starter in Finnegan's spot for Saturday vs. the Cubs.
There was more clarification about the injury. Originally called a strained triceps, Finnegan again has a strain in the left teres major muscle near his shoulder. It's the same muscle he injured in April.
"It's not in the same spot, not in the same part of the muscle," Reds head athletic trainer Steve Baumann noted. "It's a muscle that goes from the bottom of the shoulder blade and attaches to the upper part of your humerus or upper arm bone."
Prior to his activation from the 60-day DL, Finnegan underwent an MRI exam that showed he was 100 percent recovered from the injury. But he was removed in the bottom of the fourth inning vs. the Cardinals while facing Paul DeJong. He gave up three runs on three hits with four walks and two strikeouts while throwing 58 pitches.

"I was ready to pitch and everything was good from my last injury. This is just a freak accident," Finnegan said. "It's definitely heartbreaking for sure. I was so excited to be back and be with the guys, and to try and get some innings in and give our bullpen a little rest. It kind of backfired, for sure. I'll just come in and start rehabbing and go from there."
Not putting Finnegan on the DL now had to do with roster management concerns.
"If we end up [placing him on the DL], we always have the flexibility to bring back players that have been down for less than 10 days," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "I imagine that's the most practical way to see it. I do think it's going to be a while before we see Finny on the mound again, so the DL is probably inevitable."
Price will need a starter for Chicago, but held off on naming candidates. At Triple-A Louisville, Sal Romano is coming off a quality six-inning start after struggling in a previous outing. Robert Stephenson has not pitched well and has 12 walks issued over his last 18 2/3 innings in four starts. Cody Reed has pitched better of late, but lasted two innings in his previous start because he was ejected while batting.
Prospect Tyler Mahle, who made his debut at Louisville on Monday following a promotion from Double-A Pensacola, is not viewed as a likely candidate.
Brice down, Shackelford up
The Reds selected the contract of right-handed reliever Kevin Shackelford from Louisville on Tuesday. To make room on the 25-man roster, reliever Austin Brice was optioned to Louisville. Reliever Jake Buchanan was designated for assignment to open a spot on the 40-man roster.
Shackelford, who was acquired from the Brewers in the 2014 trade for Jonathan Broxton, was invited to big league camp as a non-roster player. He was 2-0 with a 1.53 ERA and 11 saves in 27 games for Louisville.
"It's awesome. I figured it was going to happen. It was like, 'Man, you might get called up against your old team,'" Shackelford said.
Shackelford did not pitch well in Spring Training to be considered for a roster spot, but has made improvements to his mechanics.
"A guy like me coming to Spring Training would just have to be dealing to have a chance to make the team," Shackelford said. "That's just being realistic. But once I got out of spring, I was able to work on stuff and find my groove, which I didn't have in spring. Guys who have seen me pitch knew that wasn't me."
Brice gave up five runs in two innings after replacing Finnegan on Monday. He was sent down because he wouldn't be available to pitch for a couple of days, Price said.
Worth noting
• Pitcher Nick Travieso, the organization's first-round selection in the 2012 Draft, is finished for the year without throwing a pitch this season. Travieso had right shoulder surgery a couple of weeks ago.
