SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- A throwing error charged to the Rockies' Jordan Patterson -- who entered the game after impact free agent Ian Desmondexited with a fractured hand -- keyed a four-run seventh that lifted the Reds to a 9-8 victory over the Rockies on Sunday afternoon at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick.
Desmond, signed for five years and $70 million to play first base, sustained his injury when hit in the left hand in the fourth inning by Rookie Davis, a Reds rotation hopeful. Desmond will see a hand specialist on Monday, the Rockies announced.
"It was just a fastball that got away from the right-handed pitcher, direct contact to the hand," Rockies manager Bud Black said. "It's a bummer. It is. It's a tough blow for us and a bad break for Ian."
Davis, 23, vaulted into rotation candidacy because of soreness in Anthony DeSclafani's right elbow, was compromised when he threw the pitch that hit Desmond. Davis was attended to by trainers for a right ankle injury after committing an error while covering first base earlier in the inning. He left immediately after hitting Desmond, having given up three runs (two earned) on two hits in three-plus innings.
Davis rolled his ankle heading into second base on his two-run double in the second inning, but said the ankle felt fine after applying ice.
"The way I was throwing, I wanted to stay out and keep going," Davis said. "After I had to go back up the plate [on a double by Trevor Story], it got worse and worse. The next pitch to Desmond, I just couldn't put much weight on it, so it kind of sailed on me."
A grand slam by the Rockies' Stephen Cardullo -- his second such homer of the spring -- came off left-hander Wandy Peralta immediately after Davis left with no outs in the fourth. After being signed out of independent ball before last season, Cardullo earned his way to the Majors by season's end. Taken off the 40-man Major League roster during the offseason, he has responded with a team-high 11 RBIs in 14 Cactus League games.
Among his eight hits this spring, Story has four home runs and three doubles.
Rockies left-hander Tyler Anderson held the Reds to three runs, none of them earned, with two hits, two strikeouts and one walk in 3 2/3 innings. He reached his pitch limit before he completed four innings, in part because of Story's error in the second, which opened the door for Davis' double.
"Even in that inning, it felt pretty good," Anderson said. "I made a lot of pitches that were close. Just a couple got away, and I rushed a little bit and things started going fast for me."
Reds Up Next: Left-hander Amir Garrett, the Reds' top pitching prospect and a candidate for the big league rotation, will have another opportunity to make his case when he starts in place of DeSclafani vs. the A's at 4:05 p.m. ET in Goodyear on Monday. Garrett is coming off his first rough outing, having given up five unearned runs on seven hits over 2 2/3 innings vs. the Angels.
Rockies Up Next: Righty rotation hopeful Antonio Senzatela, who struck out four in three innings against the Rangers in his most recent outing, will start against the Royals at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick at 2:10 p.m. MT on Monday. Starting prospect Yency Almonte is among the relievers expected to appear, as are Jordan Lyles, Adam Ottavino and Scott Oberg. The Royals will start lefty Christopher Young.
