Storen placed on DL with right elbow strain

Reds reliever hopes rest will allow him to pitch again in '17

September 13th, 2017

ST. LOUIS -- The Reds placed reliever on the 10-day disabled list on Wednesday with a right elbow strain.
The move is retroactive to Sunday, however, the right-hander has not pitched since Sept. 1. Storen is taking a week off from pitching as of Wednesday, which ultimately led to the club's decision.
"[Storen] tested it again yesterday. [It] just wasn't a good experience," manager Bryan Price said before Wednesday night's game against the Cardinals. "That's what makes it realistic to put him on the DL because we know he won't be able to pitch in a game for a week. We'll try to be optimistic about it."
Storen is hoping that the lack of progression on the injury, as evidenced by not feeling well after playing catch on Tuesday, does not end his season. He has made 58 appearances, logging 54 2/3 innings with a 4.45 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP. Despite a couple of tough outings, Storen feels pretty content with the improvements he has made this season.
"It's a game of adjustments," Storen said "I've been lucky to learn a lot from guys throughout the years and I feel like I kind of put that into play [this year]."
Worth noting
• Scooter Gennett was removed from Tuesday's game against the Cardinals due to left hand inflammation. He did not start on Wednesday, but the injury is not considered serious.
• Right-hander , who has been dealing with elbow issues all season, pitched two innings in a simulated game on Wednesday. The Reds were encouraged and may send DeSclafani to Arizona to pitch in some capacity with the instructional league.
"What we're really trying to do, and what we want to do, is get his innings up and his number of pitches up," Price said. "The first couple innings are typically where he feels his best, but as he gets stretched out as the game goes longer, I think that's where he's had some of his issues. It's important for us, before we get into the offseason, that we verify he can handle a workload without having a setback and everything we're doing is to get him to throw the number of pitches and innings that would convince all of us he's 100 percent healthy."
• Reliever , who last pitched in a game on Sept. 2, threw a bullpen session consisting of about 20 pitches on Wednesday. The left-hander is recovering from a sore right hip. The session went well and Peralts is expected to have another once the team returns to Cincinnati for a 10-day homestand.
