Price's successful challenge reverses out call

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- In the latest preseason practice with the new instant replay rule in Major League Baseball, the Reds successfully challenged an umpire's call to get it overturned during Monday's 5-4 walk-off win over the Indians at Goodyear Ballpark.

With Jay Bruce batting with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning, Brandon Phillips attempted to steal third base. Although it appeared that Phillips got his hand on the bag ahead of Lonnie Chisenhall's tag, umpire Alan Porter ruled Phillips out.

Reds manager Bryan Price emerged from the dugout to argue the call and the umpires reviewed the play. After a one-minute break, the call was overturned. Phillips, who was credited with a stolen base, emerged from the dugout to cheers as he jogged back to third base.

It was the second time this spring that the Reds asked for a review. On March 8, Price unsuccessfully challenged a tag play at second base in a game against the Angels, whose runner was ruled safe.

Earlier in this one, third-base umpire Brad Myers was carted off the field in the bottom of the second inning after being struck in the groin by a line-drive hit from Brandon Phillips. Myers was taken to an area hospital for further tests.

"It worked out better this time," Price said. "They were working with a three-man crew and at one point in time, it was a two-man crew with the injury. In that situation right there, Alan [first-base umpire Porter] has to cover a couple of different areas with the positioning and he felt like he had gotten it right. It was great we were able to go back and take a look at it and have the call reversed. It was very quick.

"We don't have any advantages here of being able to have someone in our video room tell us if we should review it or not, but it's a nice opportunity to use the technology, No. 1, and No. 2, it doesn't have to be as confrontational with the umpires. If you feel strongly that you have a beef and it's a reviewable play, it's nice to be able to go out there and use that technology to get the call right."
