ST. LOUIS -- Scooter Gennett was removed in the fifth inning of Tuesday's 13-4 loss to the Cardinals due to left hand inflammation. The amount of time he may miss is not known, though the Reds expect to get more detailed information on Wednesday.
Gennett suffered the injury during his second at-bat when he fouled off a pitch that almost hit him. Gennett then fouled a couple more pitches and felt something was wrong.
"My hand kind of jammed up a little bit and whenever I know I'm not right, when I can feel my barrel kind of drop a little bit, I've learned to be honest with myself," Gennett said. "I let the trainers know, let the manager know that I'm not on top of my game and if I'm not on top of my game, then I feel like I'm not really helping the team."
Gennett was hitless in two at-bats before being removed. He originally jammed his hand a few times during the team's recent series against the Mets.
The hope was with an off-day Monday, things would improve.
"A few days ago we were in New York and [I] got jammed a few times, which normally that doesn't really linger like it is," Gennett said. "It usually goes away after a day or two and I think that might have something to do with maybe squaring up the ball those next couple days [in New York]."
Gennett is hitting .297 this season and has already established career highs in RBIs (85) and home runs (24) this season. He had five hits in 16 at-bats in the four-game series in New York.
Gennett said he has no plans of coming back until his hand is completely healed.
"All I can do is be honest and try to help the team," Gennett said. "I just got to be smart and get it right before I get back out there."
