Phillips leaves game with toe injury

CINCINNATI -- The Reds had to lift second baseman Brandon Phillips from Tuesday's 4-3 victory over the Braves because of an injury to his left big toe. Phillips was still being evaluated after the game.

In a 0-for-3 night, Phillips struck out three times. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Skip Schumaker replaced him as a pinch-hitter and grounded out to second base.

"It was a no-brainer for me," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "He was banged up a little bit. When you think about what he has to do at second base, he has to cover a lot of ground. He has to hit, which was uncomfortable. He may have to score if he was on base on a double or a single if he was on second base. There were a lot of things you ask him to do, especially hitting second in that inning."

Schumaker stayed in the game and played the final inning at second base for Phillips. It was unclear how much time he might miss.
