CHICAGO -- When the Reds first placed right fielder Scott Schebler on the 10-day disabled list Aug. 1, with bruises in his left rotator cuff, they were expecting him to miss at least a few weeks. Perhaps getting a few extra days shaved from that prognosis, Schebler was sent on a rehab assignment at Triple-A Louisville.

Schebler is scheduled to be the designated hitter on Tuesday and play the outfield on Wednesday and Thursday. If all goes well, he could be activated by the end of the week.

"Initially we weren't sure how quickly he would respond to the anti-inflammatories and getting the soreness out of the area, getting his strength back up and the flexibility." Reds manager Bryan Price said on Monday. "It happened rather quickly."

Schebler originally hurt his shoulder in June trying to make a diving catch vs. the Cardinals and tried to play through it. That didn't go well as he batted .136 in July and .077 after the All-Star break. He later admitted he didn't speak up about playing hurt and that it affected his swing.

On the same day Schebler went on the DL, the Reds called up No. 5 prospect Jesse Winker to get his first expanded opportunity in the big leagues. The plan is to continue giving Winker playing time, which means Price will have to get a little creative with playing time for his three regular outfielders -- including Adam Duvall in left field and center fielder Billy Hamilton.

"I'm going to have to move some guys around," Price said. "This is that time of year. Teams in our position, you start to take a look at some other guys in the system. But I don't want to penalize the guys that have been here and have been performing well. But you're going to get a little more periodic time off for the regulars, I would say."

Alcantara to Double-A

The Reds announced Monday that utility player Arismendy Alcantara cleared waivers and was sent outright to Double-A Pensacola. Alcantara was designated for assignment on Saturday.

Because of a logjam of infielders and outfielders at Louisville, it was decided by the front office and Alcantara to take the assignment at Pensacola so he could get regular playing time.
