Reds to recall Holmberg for Thursday start

Taking roster spot of Smith, left-hander to duel with Fernandez in Miami

WASHINGTON -- The Reds revealed on Tuesday that left-handed pitcher David Holmberg will be recalled from Triple-A Louisville to start on Thursday vs. the Marlins.

Holmberg, who will be opposed by Jose Fernandez in the four-game series opener at Miami, will be taking the spot of Josh Smith after he was optioned to Double-A Pensacola on Monday.

It hasn't been a robust 2015 season for Holmberg, who is ranked by MLB.com as the Reds' No. 20 prospect. In 16 games, including 15 starts, this season for Louisville, he is 4-6 with a 4.78 ERA. Over 92 1/3 innings, Holmberg allowed 114 hits, 12 home runs and 36 walks with 51 strikeouts.

In seven games -- including five starts -- for the Reds in 2014, Holmberg was 2-2 with a 4.80 ERA.
