Reliever Beato lands on DL; Jaime promoted

WASHINGTON -- The Braves promoted reliever Pedro Beato from Triple-A Gwinnett when David Carpenter was placed on the disabled list with right biceps discomfort on Tuesday. Before Thursday's game against the Nationals, Beato was placed on the 15-day disabled list with the same ailment.

With Beato sidelined, the Braves promoted right-handed reliever Juan Jaime to provide depth to a bullpen that has been recently taxed. After leaving Coors Field last week, the Braves played two 13-inning games within a four-day span. They also saw two of their starting pitchers last just five innings during the six-game homestand that ended Wednesday.

Beato threw 47 pitches while recording just five outs on Tuesday. He threw 13 more pitches when he returned to the mound approximately 18 hours later for Wednesday afternoon's loss to the Phillies.

Jaime has long impressed scouts and talent evaluators with a fastball that frequently touches 100 mph. But control has always been an issue for the 26-year-old hurler, who has recorded 40 strikeouts and issued 20 walks in 20 innings for Gwinnett this year.

Jaime's statistics are marred by an ugly May 4 appearance, during which he issued four walks, surrendered two hits and retired just one of the eight batters he faced. In his past 16 innings, he has surrendered seven hits, issued eight walks and retired 23 of the 60 batters he's faced via strikeout.
