Reports swirling around Maddon to Cubs

Joe Maddon is on the verge of becoming the Cubs' next manager, according to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman, who earlier reported a deal was done. Maddon's agent and two Cubs sources say they do not have a deal.

"We don't have a done deal," said Alan Nero, Maddon's agent. "We continue to talk to several clubs. It's not to say we won't have a deal done in the next few days, and if we do, it will be announced."

Should they reach a deal with Maddon, who opted out of his contract with the Rays last week, he would replace Rick Renteria, who just completed his first season with the Cubs. Renteria is under contract through 2016 with club options for '17 and '18.

Maddon has posted a 781-729 record over 11 years as a manager, including a trip to the World Series in 2008 with Tampa Bay. He began his managing career with the Angels, taking the Halos' helm for short stints in 1996 and '99 During his nine years with the Rays from 2006-14, Maddon posted five seasons with at least 90 victories and reached the postseason four times.

He left the organization after general manager Andrew Friedman's departure to the Los Angeles Dodgers earlier this month.

While the Cubs have been quiet concerning the unfolding Maddon situation, Renteria did release the following statement to the media Monday afternoon.

"I was hired nearly a year ago to be the Chicago Cubs manager," Renteria said. "Notwithstanding all the speculation, I continue to focus my offseason preparation on achieving the goal we established from the start: bringing a championship to Chicago."
