Rox activate Kendrick; Castro among callups

DENVER -- With rosters expanding on Tuesday, the Rockies made a flurry of moves, which included recalling a fresh face and some familiar ones.

Reliever Miguel Castro -- the first prospect in the Troy Tulowitzki deal to appear with Colorado -- was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque, along with first baseman Wilin Rosario, reliever Rex Brothers and infielder Cristhian Adames. Boone Logan and Kyle Kendrick were both activated from the 15-day disabled list.

Listed at a lanky 6-foot-5 and 190 pounds, Castro towers above many of his new teammates, and Rockies manager Walt Weiss said he was certainly impressed at first glance.

Castro appeared in 13 games with Toronto earlier this season, going 0-2 with a 4.38 ERA in 12 1/3 innings. His numbers as one of Albuquerque's top late-game relievers, though, were nearly flawless -- he posted a 1.32 ERA in 13 2/3 frames.

"Heard a lot about the arm," Weiss said. "It's an impressive arm, so he's another one that we're eager to see. We'll get a good look at him the last month."

Castro didn't fare well in his Rockies debut, a 6-4 loss, surrendering four runs on three hits in 1 1/3 innings. In addition to giving up a homer, the 20-year-old Castro allowed a triple and a double and walked the pitcher before being pulled with one out in the seventh.

"I think he got a fastball up and out over [the plate] that got hit for a home run," Weiss said. "But it's a good arm."

Rosario, meanwhile, returns to Colorado after spending a month in Triple-A. In his latest stint with the Isotopes, he hit .283 with seven homers and 19 RBIs over 29 games. But perhaps more importantly, Rosario got everyday work at first base, a position he's still figuring out on the fly.

Rosario said he's been able to relax more at first base, but with Kyle Parker and Ben Paulsen currently sharing the position -- coupled with the potential return of Justin Morneau -- Rosario acknowledged that he didn't know how much time he would get there down the stretch.

"Nobody's knows," said Rosario, who was in the starting lineup, batting cleanup, for the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader. "Right now, I'm playing, and I'll just give everything I have in that game."

• Although Weiss said there will be more callups, he admitted it's "probably a long shot" that shortstop Trevor Story will make an appearance with the Rockies this season.

Many have pegged Story, the 45th overall selection in 2011 and the organization's No. 11 prospect, as Colorado's shortstop of the immediate future. He started the year at Double-A New Britain but was promoted to Triple-A in late June. In 54 games with the Isotopes, Story is hitting .269 with eight homers and 35 RBIs.

• Once a dominant late-game reliever, Brothers has struggled with control over the last two seasons. He was up with Colorado in July but made just three appearances before being optioned back down, giving up two runs, four hits and four walks in just 2 2/3 innings.

"We're all pulling really hard for Rex," Weiss said. "He's such a great kid and a great teammate, great competitor. I still believe he can be an elite reliever, so we're hoping to see him throw the ball well this last month.

"We try not to stress mechanics too much with Rex. He's better when he's just getting it and letting it rip."
