DENVER -- Rockies right-hander Antonio Senzatela will return to the rotation Wednesday, and righty Tyler Chatwood will go to the bullpen, manager Bud Black said Sunday.
After Senzatela's rough four-inning start in a loss to the Cardinals on July 24, the Rockies skipped him in the rotation. Senzatela (10-4, 4.78 ERA) made two relief appearances last week, firing three scoreless innings Wednesday and allowing two runs in two innings Friday. Meanwhile, Chatwood (6-12, 5.11), who hadn't started a game in more than a month because of a right calf strain, gave up eight runs (seven earned) in 5 1/3 innings in Wednesday's loss to the Mets.
"We feel good about Antonio starting a game, and we feel good about Chatty starting a game, which is why he started a game last week," Black said. "Those guys have done great work for us. But we're going to use all our guys."
Righty Chad Bettis (testicular cancer) and lefty Tyler Anderson (arthroscopic left knee surgery) also are attempting to work back to the rotation.
Lefty Kyle Freeland (11-7, 3.70), who left Friday night's start against the Phillies with a strained left groin and has been placed on the disabled list, threw from 75-80 feet Sunday with no pain, a positive development given the nature of his injury.
Worth noting
• With his mid-back strain healed, lefty Jake McGee (0-1, 3.27 ERA) returned to the bullpen Sunday. Righty Shane Carle was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque.
• Chatwood has remained positive, saying he threw the ball well Wednesday but the long layoff was an issue. Chatwood gave up two homers, but he also had some missed plays behind him and experienced bad luck with weak contact.

"I think I just need to pitch," Chatwood said. "I threw pretty well, but to take a month off and come back and try to pitch, it's tough, especially when you get your pitch count up and you're not used to doing that for a month.
"I'll do whatever they ask me to do, but you look at my career numbers and I'm pretty good as a starter. But we're in a playoff run, so if they want me to help out in the bullpen, I'll help in the bullpen."
Black believes Chatwood could help the bullpen in ground-ball situations. He has forced 2.31 groundouts for each out in the air this season. Theoretically, he could fill the role of Scott Oberg, a righty who was optioned to Albuquerque on Saturday.
• First baseman/outfielder Ian Desmond did not come off the DL, although he is eligible to. Black said Desmond is "getting better, feeling more confident." He won't return until he's able to take batting practice and fielding drills, however.
• Middle infielder Brendan Rodgers, ranked by MLB Pipeline as the No. 9 overall prospect and the top prospect in the Rockies' chain, left Sunday's Double-A Hartford game at Erie with quadriceps tightness, the Rockies announced. He had doubled in his first at-bat.
