SAN FRANCISCO -- Charlie Blackmon's terrific season delivered him a new spot in Rockies franchise history Tuesday. Blackmon roped a two-out, two-RBI double in the second inning of Colorado's 4-3 loss to San Francisco for hit No. 200 of the season.
He became the first Rockies player to reach the landmark since Matthew Holliday had 216 hits during the 2007 campaign.
"That's a great standard, for sure," Colorado manager Bud Black said. "Charlie's had a fantastic year. He's hit from day one. He's been really consistent. Really happy for Charlie, the accolades he's getting."
The Rockies center fielder is the eighth player in franchise history to accomplish the feat and first this season across the Majors. Astros second baseman Jose Altuve isn't far behind with 193 hits.
The historic double, which had an exit velocity of 103.2 mph by Statcast™, gave the Rockies an early 2-0 lead. But the loss dropped Colorado a single game ahead Milwaukee for the National League's second Wild Card spot.
Teammate Carlos Gonzalez is eager to see how far Blackmon climbs in the coming weeks.
"It's been unbelievable watching all the things that he has accomplished this year," Gonzalez said. "It's special. ... Whenever you see a teammate get to where he's at right now, with all the hard work, it's not a surprise. It's a great thing to see. I'm really happy for him."
Before Holliday had 216 hits, Todd Helton had 209 in 2003 and Juan Pierre had 202 in 2001. Helton also tallied 216 hits in 2000, the only Rockies player to reach the 200-hit mark twice. Blackmon came close last year with 187 hits.
No players in the Rockies' 200-hit club have had more triples than Blackmon in a season. He's posted 14 this season -- also the top mark in the Majors.
Next up on Blackmon's historic tear? The franchise hits record. Dante Bichette owns that mark from his 1998 campaign with 219 hits in 662 at-bats.
"We still have two weeks to go," Gonzalez said. "He has more opportunities for numbers to make it even more special."
