Rockies rally to double up Cubs

March 7th, 2016

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Mark Reynolds' sixth-inning RBI double keyed a two-run frame as the Rockies defeated a Cubs split-squad, 4-2, in a Cactus League game at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick on Monday before 7,913.
Reynolds' double off Neil Ramriez, who is competing for a bullpen spot, came after Gerardo Parra's single, and broke a 2-2 tie. Ryan Casteel then drove in Reynolds.
The Cubs had two gasp-inspiring homers -- a 385-foot Jason Heyard shot to left in the first inning and a 452-foot Anthony Rizzo drive to center in the third. Both came off Rockies starter Jon Gray, who gave up the two runs on two hits and three walks in 2 2/3 innings.
Cubs starter Aaron Brooks, obtained from the Athletics in the Feb. 25 trade for outfielder Chris Coghlan, struck out one, walked one and held the Rockies to one hit in two innings.
Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado was 2-for-3. Righty Carlos Estevez, who pitched in Class A and Double-A last year and is trying to make the jump to the Rockies' bullpen, gave up a Miguel Montero one-out double in the sixth but kept the frame clean and finished with a strikeout to continue a scoreless spring. Lefty prospect Sam Moll, also considered on the radar, struck out two Cubs in a spotless eighth.
Up next for the Cubs:Kyle Hendricks will make his first Cactus League start and second spring appearance on Tuesday when the Cubs play host to the Dodgers at Sloan Park. Hendricks, who pitched two innings in relief in his first outing, was 8-7 with a 3.95 ERA last season. The game will begin at 2:05 p.m. CT and will air live on a free, exclusive cubs.com audio webcast.
Up next for the Rockies: Righty Jordan Lyles, who gave up two hits in two innings against the D-backs in his first spring outing while working on his changeup, is scheduled for three innings against the Royals and righty Edinson Volquez. First pitch on Tuesday at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick is 1:10 p.m. MT, live on Gameday Audio.
