On July 9, as the Colorado Rockies battled their way to an 8-3 win over the Phillies, a young man fighting cancer watched with his family from one of the best seats at Coors Field.
Jeb Schroder, a 19 year old from Campo, Colo., who is battling testicular cancer, attended the game thanks to UCHealth's Moments to Shine program, receiving a VIP experience before, during and after the win.
Schroder had always wanted to attend a Rockies game with his entire family, but baseball was only a small part of the day. UCHealth's Moments to Shine makes arrangements with community partners, giving patients like him a thoughtful, unique experience that goes beyond physical healing; giving them a moment to shine.
Schroder and his family -- his parents, two brothers, grandparents, girlfriend and best friend -- received two rooms at the Crawford Hotel, a suite behind home plate and the chance to watch batting practice from the dugout and visit with several Rockies players.
"It was awesome," Schroder told ROOT Sports during a sixth-inning interview. "I got here about 4 o'clock, and everything was a big surprise. I got to go down to the field and meet Trevor Story, Nolan Arenado, Carlos González and [former Rockies star] Vinny Castilla. I got a bunch of autographs and it was pretty neat, and they gave me this suite. This is a big surprise, everything. This is awesome."

Schroder found out about the day on June 16, when he arrived at the University of Colorado Hospital for a scheduled outpatient surgery. Castilla met Jeb and his family at the hospital and presented him with an engraved silver box that contained eight tickets to the July 9 game. Several members of the Schroder family purchased tickets of their own to be on hand for his special day.
Before the game, Schroder played catch with Castilla, sat in the dugout to watch batting practice and received a signed bat and jersey with several autographs from players, including his current favorite Rockie, Arenado.
The Rockies also escorted Jeb and his family onto the field following the game for the annual fireworks show.
Schroder's live interview and a special segment were shown during ROOT's postgame show and during highlight shows, with the Moments to Shine honoree urging all people to be conscious of their health.
"It really can happen to anybody," he told the network. "(Cancer) doesn't really choose people. Just because you're young and healthy, you may think that it can't catch me, but it definitely can. It can happen to anybody. Just get yourself checked and be safe."
