Holland day to day after 'kitchen accident'

Closer has cut on right index finger, was unavailable Tuesday

August 2nd, 2017

DENVER -- Rockies closer Greg Holland was not available for the ninth inning of Tuesday night's 5-4 victory over the Mets because he had suffered a cut on his right index finger in what manager Bud Black called "a kitchen accident."
Holland, 33-for-34 on save chances this season, was seen wearing a bandage on the finger Wednesday, and hoped to be available if needed.
Left-hander Mike Dunn pitched the top of the ninth with the game tied at 4, before 's RBI single in the bottom of the frame won it. Holland was up in the bullpen in the eighth, but didn't enter the game.
"He had a kitchen accident yesterday, cut his index finger on his throwing hand and it's truly day to day," Black said. "We'll see how it progresses the next 5-6 hours, whether the little cut is going to heal enough to allow him to throw. Last night he gave it a shot, and it wasn't going to happen. This is one of those Mother Nature things."

Such incidents aren't new to the Rockies. In 2009, then-rookie was out briefly after suffering a puncture wound to his left hand. He was putting away the dishes and accidentally punctured his hand with a steak knife.

Worth noting

• Left-handed-hitting outfielder , who hasn't played in the Majors this season because of a stress reaction in the sixth rib, has been placed on Triple-A Albuquerque's seven-day disabled list with mid-back spasms. Dahl left Monday's game after seven innings, and the Rockies originally said he was moved for "conservatism," and nothing more. The club's explanation could have been because some on social media speculated that he was being traded, but no move occurred before Monday's non-waiver Trade Deadline.

• Catcher , obtained in a trade with the Rangers on Sunday, felt better Wednesday after being scratched from Tuesday's lineup by a stomach illness that hit after batting practice. Lucroy participated in pregame activities Wednesday, but was not in the lineup against the Mets.

• The Rockies have released right-handed reliever , who was designated for assignment Saturday.
