DENVER -- The home run has long been a staple of the Rockies' offense, but rookie Trevor Story believes the team is harder to beat if it can win without going deep.
"We don't want to just live and die by the long ball -- we showed our versatility tonight as an offense and produced some runs," said Story, who had one of the Rockies' five doubles in their homerless, 5-2 victory over the Giants at Coors Field on Friday night.
On Thursday night, Story hit one of the Rockies' three homers (Carlos Gonzalez and Dustin Garneau had the others) in an 8-2 victory over the Red Sox at Fenway Park that put a positive end on a 3-6 road trip.

With the team plane having landed Friday after 4 a.m. MT, fatigue was a factor Friday. Apparently, doubles save energy.
With the Giants leading, 1-0, Tony Wolters opened the bottom of the third with a smash off the left calf of Giants pitcher Albert Suarez that rebounded into short right field. Wolters, young at 23 and fast for a catcher, hustled a double.
Leadoff man Charlie Blackmon extended his streak of reaching base to a career-best 22 games with an RBI double, and Nolan Arenado (1-for-20 in the previous five games) doubled Blackmon home. Mark Reynolds and Story doubled in the fourth for a 3-1 lead.

With the Rockies getting good pitching on a more regular basis than past years -- including Tyler Chatwood's seven innings with one unearned run Friday -- they're going to have to make due when they don't hit home runs. The Rockies, hanging around at 23-24, could use a string of well-played games. They're 9-10 at home, but the six remaining games on this homestand against the Giants and Reds offer a chance to move toward a goal of controlling their home park.
"The important thing is to just take it day by day right now and try and play good baseball and doing everything right in terms of fundamentals and stuff you can control," Blackmon said. "And then understand, yeah, we lost a couple games on the road trip, but that might be one of the toughest road trips of the year.
"So I think if we just keep controlling what we can control, we're going to be successful really quickly."
