Lyles could miss next start with sprained toe

DENVER -- Rockies manger Walt Weiss said "it's not been decided" whether right-hander Jordan Lyles will make Colorado's next road trip. Lyles suffered a sprained left big toe in Saturday's Game 1 loss to the Giants, which cut his start short after just four-plus innings.

The Rockies start a three-game series in Cincinnati on Monday and then head to Philadelphia for the weekend. Lyles is scheduled to start Friday's series opener at Citizens Bank Park.

"As far as the status of his next start, we're not sure yet," Weiss said before Sunday's series finale with the Giants. "There's some things that have to happen in between starts. He's got to be able to throw his side [session], so those are determining factors."

Athletic trainers checked on Lyles three times Saturday -- the first instance coming after Hunter Pence's single in the fourth. Lyles got through two more hitters before needing medical attention again and ultimately checked out after facing three batters in the fifth.

"I just overextended my big toe, and something popped," Lyles said Sunday. "Hopefully, I can be out there next start. I'm going to try my best like I did with my hand.

"When I'm out there, I'm going to say what I need to say so I can stay out there. It was still early in the game. Got to get my innings."

Lyles had little trouble slicing through San Francisco's lineup pre-injury, yielding just one baserunner through the Giants' first 10 hitters. Even the one blemish was a strikeout-turned-throwing error, which occurred when Rockies catcher Nick Hundley threw a dropped third strike into right field.

But after the injury, Lyles' effectiveness instantly shifted. Two run-scoring singles immediately followed Pence's at-bat, and Lyles exited after loading the bases in the fifth.

"I made some pitches that weren't my best [after getting hurt]," Lyles said. "Definitely with not the same intensity or conviction as the first couple innings."
