DENVER -- The Rockies didn't make their fans wait for the future. The MLBPipeline.com Rockies Prospect Player of the Year, outfielder David Dahl, and the Prospect Pitcher of the Year, German Márquez, finished 2016 contributing to the Major League team.
Dahl joined the club July 25, hit safely in his first 17 games and finished with a .315 batting average, 12 doubles, four triples, seven home runs and 24 RBIs in 63 games. His numbers would translate to 59 extra-base hits over a full season.
As a comparison, National League batting champ DJ LeMahieu had 51 extra-base hits. Dahl, 22, played mostly left field during his callup, and could find himself in competition for starts with Gerardo Parra, who slumped and battled a troublesome ankle injury in the first season of a three-year, $27.5 million contract.

Dahl, the Rockies' first-round pick in 2012 (10th overall), was named Colorado's prospect player of the year thanks in part to his strong Minor League numbers. Dahl hit .278 with a .367 on-base percentage and .500 slugging percentage at Double-A Hartford, and sizzled in 16 games at Triple-A Albuquerque -- hitting .484/.529/.887 with five home runs, six doubles and two triples in 62 at-bats.
A center fielder by trade, Dahl asked his managers and coaches to play him at all three outfield positions to help him prepare to play wherever an opening occurred.
Marquez, 21, turned out to be the gem from a Rockies-Rays trade last offseason.
Veteran lefty reliever Jake McGee struggled with his health and consistency with the Rockies. Rays outfielder Corey Dickerson hit 24 homers but batted .245 and Minor League infielder Kevin Padlo hit .229 with Class A Bowling Green. However, Marquez dominated at Double-A Hartford -- where he was named Eastern League Pitcher of the Year -- and had five solid starts at Albuquerque before finishing the year in the Majors (1-1, 5.23 ERA in six games, including three starts).

In 21 starts at Hartford, Marquez went 9-6 with a 2.85 ERA and 126 strikeouts in 135 2/3 innings. He struck out seven or more 10 times, and twice took hitless starts into the eighth inning. At Albuquerque, Marquez went 2-0 with a 4.35 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 31 innings.
Marquez, the Rockies' No. 5 prospect, struggled in his Major League debut, giving up three runs in 2 1/3 innings at San Diego in relief, something he hadn't done much in the Minors. But he did not allow a run in his next two relief appearances (three innings).
Marquez won his first Major League start by holding the Cardinals, who were attempting to climb into the playoffs, to one run on four hits in five innings of the Rockies' 11-1 victory on Sept. 21. At 21 years and 212 days, Marquez became the second-youngest winning pitcher in Rockies history behind Jamey Wright (21 years and 206 days on July 17, 1996).
In his next start, Marquez struggled against the playoff-bound Giants -- 12 hits and six runs in 4 1/3 innings -- but finished up with a solid six innings. He notched seven strikeouts against two runs on six hits in a no-decision against the Brewers.
