Rox reach Minor League deals with Corpas, Masset

DENVER -- Right-handed relief pitcher Manny Corpas has agreed to return to the Rockies in 2014, and fellow righty reliever Nick Masset -- formerly of the Rangers, White Sox and Reds -- is completing talks with Colorado after missing the last two seasons because of right shoulder surgery. Both will have Minor League contracts with invitations to Major League Spring Training, sources told MLB.com on Friday. The club has not confirmed either deal.

Corpas, 31, went to camp last year under a similar deal and began the season at Triple-A Colorado Springs. In the Majors, he made 31 appearances and went 1-2 with a 4.54 ERA, striking out 30 and walking 16.

Before reaching his deal with the Rockies, Corpas received interest from the Orioles. Corpas will compete for a job in middle relief or a setup role. His contract allows him to opt out if he doesn't win a job on the Opening Day roster.

Corpas broke in with the Rockies in 2006, and by the end of '07, he was the closer on a club that went to the World Series. However, right elbow injuries halted his career. Corpas left the Rockies after the 2010 season, was out of the Majors in '11 as he recovered from Tommy John surgery, and spent '12 with the Cubs, going 0-2 with a 5.01 ERA in 48 games.

Masset, 31, is 16-14 with a 3.78 ERA and four saves in 308 career Major League appearances from 2006-11.

Over his career, Masset has recorded 2.01 strikeouts for every walk. In his last season, with the Reds, he was 3-4 with a 3.71 ERA in 75 appearances. His best season was 2009, when he went 5-1 with a 3.40 ERA in a career-high 82 appearances.
