Rockies recall LHP Rex Brothers from Triple-A Colorado Springs

Club Options RHP Carlos Torres to Triple-A

The Colorado Rockies announced today that the club has recalled left-handed pitcher Rex Brothers from Triple-A Colorado Springs. To make room on the active roster for Brothers, the Rockies have optioned right-handed pitcher Carlos Torres to Triple-A. Brothers (#49) will be in uniform and available for today’s Rockies vs. Dodgers game at Coors Field.

Brothers, 24, will be making his second stint with the Rockies after making his first career Opening Day roster out of Spring Training. The left-hander was optioned May 20th and had a 1.69 ERA (5.1 ip, 1 er) with three walks, three hits and 13 strikeouts in four appearances for Triple-A Colorado Springs. Brothers has a record of 2-2 with a 5.87 ERA (15.1 ip, 10 er), 12 walks and 21 strikeouts in 22 appearances for the Rockies this season. In 70 career Major League games, the Tennessee native is 3-4 with a 3.70 ERA (56.0 ip, 23 er), 32 walks and 80 strikeouts, all since 2011. Brothers was originally the 34th overall selection by Colorado in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft out of Lipscomb University. 

Torres, 29, has made three stints with the Rockies this season, with no record while allowing three runs on five hits and five walks with four strikeouts in four appearances. He has spent the balance of the 2012 season at Triple-A Colorado Springs, where he is 2-1 with a 2.45 ERA (33.0 ip, 9 er), 13 walks and 32 strikeouts in seven starts for the Sky Sox. In 17 career Major League appearances, six starts, the California native has a 1-3 record with a 6.56 ERA (48.0 ip, 36 er). Torres was signed by Colorado as a Minor League free agent on January 11, 2012 and was a non-roster invitee to Major League Spring Training.

The Rockies have 39 players on the 40-man roster.
