Rockies recall RHP Jairo Diaz, reinstate RHP Qualls

The Colorado Rockies announced that they have recalled right-handed pitcher Jairo Díaz from Triple-A Albuquerque and reinstated right-hander Chad Qualls from the 10-day disabled list.

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Colorado Rockies announced today that they have recalled right-handed pitcher Jairo Díaz from Triple-A Albuquerque and reinstated right-hander Chad Qualls from the 10-day disabled list (lower back spasms). Additionally, the Rockies have placed left-handed pitcher Tyler Anderson (left knee inflammation) and outfielder Carlos González (right shoulder strain) on the 10-day disabled list.

• Díaz, 26, will be making his first appearance with the Rockies since 2015 … missed the entire 2016 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery … began the 2017 season on the 10-day disabled list prior to being reinstated and optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque on April 29 … in 10 appearances between High-A Lancaster and Albuquerque, went 0-1 with a 4.66 ERA (9.2 IP, 5 ER), two walks and 12 strikeouts … in his first season with the Rockies in 2015, went 0-1 with a 2.37 ERA (19.0 IP, 5 ER), six walks and 18 strikeouts in 21 appearances … made his Major League debut with Los Angeles-AL in 2014 and allowed two runs in 5.2 innings pitched with three walks and eight strikeouts over five appearances … was acquired by Colorado from Los Angeles-AL in exchange for Josh Rutledge on Dec. 10, 2014.

• Qualls, 38, was placed on the disabled list June 18 with lower back spasms … is 1-0 with a 4.60 ERA (15.2 IP, 8 ER) with five walks and nine strikeouts in his second season with the Rockies, his 14th in Major League Baseball … in his career, is 52-47 with a 3.87 ERA (806.1 IP, 347 ER), 211 walks and 622 strikeouts over 842 career appearances … the Lomita, Calif., native signed a two-year contract with Colorado on Dec. 8, 2015, and has previously appeared with Houston (2004-07, 2014-15), Arizona (2008-10), Tampa Bay (2010), San Diego (2011), Philadelphia (2012), New York-AL (2012), Pittsburgh (2012) and Miami (2013).

• Anderson, 27, was removed from Sunday's game at Los Angeles-NL in the third inning … it was his first start, second appearance, since being activated from the 10-day disabled list on June 22 (left knee inflammation) … in 13 appearances, 12 starts, this season is 3-5 with a 6.11 ERA (63.1 IP, 43 ER), 23 walks and 63 strikeouts … since making his Major League debut in 2016, Anderson has posted a record of 8-11 with a 4.46 ERA (177.2 IP, 88 ER), 51 walks and 162 strikeouts in 32 appearances, 31 starts.

• González, 31, will be making his first appearance on the disabled list since 2014 … in 68 games this season, is batting .221 (54-for-244) with 13 doubles, six home runs, 20 RBI, 29 walks and one stolen base … in 1,132 career games with Oakland (2008) and Colorado (2009-17), has batted .287 (1,206-for-4,199) with 693 runs, 246 doubles, 36 triples, 207 home runs, 674 RBI, 366 walks and 115 stolen bases.
