Colorado Rockies reinstate right-handed pitcher Jon Gray, recall catcher Ryan Hanigan

Catcher Tom Murphy optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque, right-handed pitcher Chad Qualls designated for assignment

PHOENIX - The Colorado Rockies announced today that they have reinstated right-handed pitcher Jon Gray from the 10-day disabled list (broken bone in left foot) and have recalled catcher Ryan Hanigan from Triple-A Albuquerque. Additionally, the Rockies have optioned catcher Tom Murphy to Triple-A and have designated right-hander Chad Qualls for assignment.

  • Gray, 25, will be the Rockies starting pitcher tonight at Arizona, his first start since April 13 at San Francisco … left that start in the fourth inning after suffering a broken bone in his left foot and was placed on the 10-day disabled list April 14 … in three starts prior to being placed on the disabled list, had no decisions with a 4.38 ERA (12.1 IP, 6 ER), seven walks and nine strikeouts … in three rehab appearances between High-A Lancaster and Triple-A Albuquerque, went 0-0 with a 1.35 ERA (13.1 IP, 2 ER), six walks and 18 strikeouts … in 41 career starts, Gray has a career Major League record of 10-12 with a 4.76 ERA (221.0 IP, 117 ER), 80 walks and 234 strikeouts since making his debut in 2015.   • Hanigan, 36, will be making his second stint on the Rockies active roster … had his contract purchased from Albuquerque on May 3 and appeared in 13 games before being optioned to Albuquerque on June 15 … batted .256 (11-for-43) in those 13 games with two home runs, eight RBI and three walks … posted a 3.04 catchers ERA … in 17 games with Albuquerque this season, has batted .264 (14-for-53) with three doubles, eight RBI and 10 walks … was signed to a Minor League contract by the Rockies on March 28 … in parts of 11 seasons with Cincinnati (2007-13), Tampa Bay (2014), Boston (2015-16) and Colorado (2017), has batted .250 (476-for-1,901) with 69 doubles, one triple, 30 home runs and 210 RBI in 660 games.
